Why Do Joints Crack

Joints crack because movement can change pressure inside the joint or cause nearby tissues to shift. In many cases, the sound comes from changes in pressure within the lubricating fluid inside the joint, allowing tiny gas bubbles to form or collapse. Other cracks occur when a tendon or ligament briefly moves across a nearby bone before returning to its usual position.

These sounds are a normal result of movement in many healthy joints. Although a crack, pop, or click may sound similar, the mechanical process behind the noise can vary depending on the joint and how it is moving.

Different joints create different kinds of sounds

Not every crack, pop, or snap has the same cause. The joints in the fingers often produce a sharp popping sound because of pressure changes within the joint capsule, the flexible tissue that surrounds the joint.

Larger joints, such as the knees, shoulders, ankles, or hips, are more likely to make clicking or snapping sounds. In these areas, tendons or ligaments may briefly glide across nearby bones as the joint moves, creating a distinct noise.

Pressure changes inside the joint can create a pop

Every movable joint contains a lubricating liquid called synovial fluid. This fluid reduces friction and allows bones to move smoothly against one another.

When a joint stretches or changes position, the pressure inside the joint can change quickly. Dissolved gases that are naturally present in the fluid respond to that pressure change, and a popping sound may occur. This process, known as cavitation, is one of the best-supported explanations for the familiar crack heard when knuckles are intentionally cracked.

After a pressure-related pop occurs, the gases need time to return to their previous state before the same type of pop can happen again in that joint.

Tendons and ligaments can make joints click or snap

Some joint sounds come from tissues outside the joint itself. Tendons connect muscles to bones, while ligaments connect bones to each other. As a joint moves, these tissues can briefly glide across a bony surface before slipping back into place.

Unlike a pressure-related pop inside the joint, this movement creates sound because the soft tissue changes position as the joint bends or rotates. The result is often a soft click, snap, or flick rather than a sharp pop. Similar movement of muscles and surrounding tissues can also contribute to muscle twitching, although the underlying mechanism is different.

Joint sounds vary from person to person

No two joints move in exactly the same way, so the amount of cracking can vary from one person to another. Differences in joint shape, the flexibility of surrounding tissues, and the kinds of movements performed throughout the day all influence how often these sounds occur.

A joint may also be more likely to make noise after remaining in one position for a period of time. As movement begins again, the joint fluid redistributes and surrounding tissues adjust to the change in position, creating another opportunity for a pop, click, or snap.

Putting it all in context

Joint cracking reflects the normal mechanics of movement rather than a single process. Depending on the joint and how it is moving, the sound may come from pressure changes within the joint or from tendons and ligaments shifting across nearby structures. Together, these mechanisms show how multiple parts of the musculoskeletal system work in coordination each time the body moves.
