Why Do We Breathe Through One Nostril More Than the Other
Breathing normally happens through both nostrils at the same time, even though one often allows more airflow than the other. This is part of a normal process called the nasal cycle. As tissues inside the nose gently swell on one side and shrink on the other, airflow naturally shifts back and forth. Most people are unaware of this cycle until one side feels noticeably more open than the other.
Airflow changes because the inside of the nose is always adjusting
The inside of each nostril contains curved structures called turbinates. These are covered with soft tissue that changes size as blood flow increases or decreases.
When the tissue on one side swells, that nostril becomes a little narrower, so less air passes through it. At the same time, the opposite side opens slightly, allowing more air to move through. The overall amount of air reaching the lungs usually stays about the same even though one nostril feels more open.
These changes happen automatically without conscious control.
The nasal cycle helps the nose filter and prepare the air
The nose does much more than provide a path for air. It warms, moistens, and filters incoming air before it reaches the lungs.
Alternating airflow helps both sides of the nose share this work. While one side carries more air, the other has an opportunity to restore moisture while continuing to filter incoming air. After a period of time, the pattern naturally switches, and the opposite nostril becomes more open.
Everyday conditions can make the difference easier to notice
The nasal cycle is always present, but certain situations can make the difference between the two nostrils feel more obvious.
Temporary swelling from a cold or seasonal allergies may reduce airflow on one side more than usual. Lying on one side can also increase blood flow to the lower side of the nose, making that nostril temporarily feel more blocked. Natural differences in nasal anatomy may also influence how open each nostril feels at different times. A cold may also cause a runny nose, while irritation inside the nose can trigger sneezing as another normal protective response.
Feeling blocked is different from the normal nasal cycle
People often describe breathing through “only one nostril,” but in many cases both nostrils are still passing air. One side simply has a wider opening, making it feel like it is doing most of the work.
A true blockage differs from the normal nasal cycle because it does not result from the regular back-and-forth changes in turbinate swelling. Instead, the normal cycle naturally shifts airflow from one side to the other, which is why the sensation often changes throughout the day. During physical activity, the body also adjusts breathing faster to meet changing oxygen demands, although that is controlled separately from the nasal cycle.
