Why Does Hair Shed
Hair naturally sheds because each strand follows its own growth cycle. Instead of growing continuously, hair moves through stages of active growth, rest, and release before a new strand begins growing from the same follicle. Since individual hairs are at different points in this cycle, shedding happens gradually every day rather than all at once. This ongoing process replaces older hairs with new ones while helping maintain overall hair coverage.
Each hair follows its own growth cycle
Hair grows from tiny structures in the skin called follicles. Most of the time, a strand is in its active growth phase, where it continues getting longer. Eventually, that strand enters a shorter transition phase, followed by a resting phase.
At the end of the resting phase, the follicle releases the old hair. A new strand then begins growing from the same follicle, gradually pushing the old one out. Shedding is simply the final step in this normal cycle.
Because each follicle works independently, neighboring hairs are rarely in the same stage. That keeps the process balanced so hair is replaced continuously instead of being lost in large sections.
The amount of shedding can change over time
Although shedding is always happening, the amount people notice can vary. Some days, more loose hairs may collect in a hairbrush, on a pillow, or in the shower because a larger group of hairs reaches the shedding stage around the same time.
Hormonal changes, physical stress on the body, illness, certain medications, nutritional changes, and seasonal patterns can all influence the timing of the hair growth cycle. These factors may shift more hairs into their resting phase, leading to a temporary increase in shedding.
Shedding is different from hair breakage
Hair that comes out during brushing or washing is not always the result of natural shedding. Some strands break before completing their growth cycle because the hair shaft has become damaged or weakened.
A naturally shed hair has been released by its follicle after completing its cycle. A broken hair snaps somewhere along its length while the root remains in the follicle. Although both leave hair behind in a brush or on clothing, they happen for different reasons.
Hair found after brushing or washing may come from either process.
Hair is continuously replaced
Hair shedding is only one part of the renewal cycle. As older hairs are released, follicles begin producing new strands to replace them. Because follicles operate independently, this process happens continuously across the scalp, allowing hair to renew itself while maintaining overall coverage. Like scars, hair replacement is part of the body’s ongoing process of renewing and repairing tissues, although the two systems work in different ways.
