Why Do Fingers Wrinkle in Water
Fingers become wrinkled in water because the body actively changes the skin after it has been wet for a while. The nervous system triggers tiny blood vessels in the fingertips to narrow, causing the tissue beneath the skin to shrink slightly. As the outer layer of skin adjusts to these changes, it forms the familiar wrinkles. Rather than being caused by water alone, this is a temporary response controlled by the body.
The wrinkles start beneath the surface
The skin on the fingertips is specialized for gripping and sensing touch, so it responds differently than most other areas of the body. When fingertips stay in water, the nervous system narrows small blood vessels beneath the skin. This reduces the volume of the tissue underneath, allowing the outer layer to fold into wrinkles. Although the skin also absorbs some water, scientists now understand that water absorption alone does not fully explain why these wrinkles appear.
The response may improve grip
Scientists believe this temporary change may improve grip on wet objects. The folds can channel water away from parts of the skin that make contact with a surface, much like the tread on a tire helps move water aside.
Studies have found that people may handle wet objects more effectively when their fingers are wrinkled than when they are smooth. Researchers continue to study exactly how much this improves grip and whether it was the original evolutionary reason for the response.
Fingers and toes respond differently than other skin
Water-induced wrinkles are most noticeable on the fingers and toes because these areas have thick, hairless skin designed for gripping and sensing touch.
