Why Do We Sleepwalk
Sleepwalking happens when part of the brain wakes up enough to control movement while the areas responsible for full awareness remain asleep. This partial awakening usually occurs during deep non-REM sleep, allowing a person to walk or perform simple activities without being fully conscious. Because awareness is limited, people who sleepwalk often have little or no memory of the episode after they wake.
Deep sleep can briefly overlap with wakefulness
Sleep follows a series of repeating stages throughout the night. Sleepwalking is linked to deep non-REM sleep, which is most common during the first part of the night.
During the transition out of deep sleep, the brain does not always switch directly from sleeping to full wakefulness. Areas that control movement can become active before the regions responsible for awareness, reasoning, and memory have fully awakened. This temporary overlap allows the body to move while conscious thought remains largely absent.
Familiar actions can happen without full awareness
During a sleepwalking episode, the brain is operating differently than it does during normal wakefulness. A person may walk through familiar spaces, open doors, or perform simple routines because basic movement patterns remain available without conscious planning.
Since conscious thinking is still limited, behavior may appear confused or disconnected from the surroundings even though the person is moving.
Some brains are more prone to sleepwalking
Sleepwalking is much more common in children than adults, and many children naturally stop experiencing it as the brain develops and sleep patterns mature. It also tends to run in families, suggesting that inherited traits influence how the brain moves between deep sleep and wakefulness. Researchers understand the process that produces sleepwalking reasonably well, but they are still studying why some people are more likely to experience these partial awakenings than others.
Certain conditions make partial awakenings more likely
Sleepwalking does not happen every time someone enters deep sleep. Factors that interrupt deep sleep or increase the chance of a partial awakening can make an episode more likely.
Interrupted sleep, lack of sleep, stress, fever, some medications, and certain sleep disorders can all influence how smoothly the brain moves between stages of sleep. These factors do not directly cause sleepwalking on their own, but they can increase the likelihood of an episode in someone who is already prone to it.

Sleepwalking reflects the way the brain moves between deep sleep and wakefulness rather than switching instantly from one state to the other. During a brief partial awakening, movement can become possible before conscious awareness fully returns, creating a temporary state between sleeping and waking. Although researchers are still learning why some people are more likely to experience sleepwalking than others, the underlying process is a recognized part of how the brain functions during deep non-REM sleep, alongside other behaviors such as dreaming, talking in your sleep, or teeth grinding that can occur while a person is asleep.
