Why Do We Shiver When Cold

Shivering is the body’s automatic way of producing extra heat when it starts to get too cold. Rapid, involuntary muscle contractions generate warmth, helping maintain a stable internal temperature. This response begins when the nervous system detects that the body is losing heat faster than it can replace it.

Shivering is one of several automatic responses that help regulate body temperature. While it often causes noticeable shaking, its main purpose is to produce heat rather than movement.

The brain detects when the body is cooling

The body constantly monitors its temperature through sensors in the skin and deeper tissues. When these sensors detect cooling, they send signals to an area of the brain called the hypothalamus, which acts as the body’s temperature control center.

If the brain determines that additional heat is needed, it sends signals through the nervous system to skeletal muscles throughout the body. Those muscles begin contracting rapidly, producing the movements recognized as shivering. Because this response is automatic, it happens without conscious control.

Rapid muscle contractions produce heat

Every muscle contraction uses energy. During shivering, muscles contract repeatedly in quick succession, generating heat as a byproduct. Rather than producing useful movement, these contractions increase heat production to help offset the body’s heat loss.

As more muscles contract at the same time, the body can generate enough extra heat to help maintain its internal temperature until conditions change.

Conserving heat is part of the same response

Producing more heat is only part of the body’s response to cold. At the same time, blood vessels near the surface of the skin often become narrower, reducing blood flow to the skin and slowing heat loss. This helps retain more of the heat produced by shivering and also explains why hands get cold and feet get cold more quickly than the body’s core.

Some people also notice goosebumps during cold exposure. Like shivering, they are an automatic response triggered by the nervous system, although they contribute much less to keeping the body warm.

The response varies from person to person

The point at which shivering begins differs between individuals. Body size, clothing, activity level, recent exposure to cold, and natural differences in metabolism can all influence how quickly the brain activates this response and how noticeable it becomes.

Shivering can also occur in situations other than cold exposure, such as chills without being cold, because the brain may temporarily raise the body’s target temperature. Even then, the muscle contractions serve the same purpose of generating additional heat. In very cold conditions, reduced blood flow may also contribute to fingers turning white before the body begins producing more heat.

Putting it all in context

Shivering is an automatic heat-producing response that helps keep the body’s internal temperature within a stable range. By detecting cooling, activating rapid muscle contractions, and reducing heat loss at the same time, the nervous system coordinates several processes that work together to maintain a stable body temperature despite changing conditions.
