What Happens to Food After You Eat It?
Your body starts taking the food apart almost as soon as you eat it. It doesn’t just send that sandwich or apple straight through you. From the first few bites, the food starts changing into something your body can break down and eventually absorb.
Digestion Starts With the First Bite
That first bite is already part of the process. Your teeth break food into smaller pieces, while saliva moistens it and starts breaking down some of the carbohydrates.
Once you swallow, muscles in your esophagus push the food toward your stomach. By this point, the food is already softer and less like what was sitting on your plate.
In your stomach, muscular movements mix the food with stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This continues breaking it apart and turns it into a thick, partially digested mixture that can gradually move into the small intestine.
Your Body Absorbs What It Can Use
Once that mixture reaches the small intestine, the process starts separating what your body can use from what will keep moving through the digestive tract. The food keeps being broken down until its nutrients are in forms the body can absorb.
Most of that absorption happens in the small intestine. Nutrients pass through its lining and are carried to other parts of the body. So when people say the body “uses” the food you eat, the whole piece of food isn’t somehow traveling to your muscles or other tissues. Its usable components have been separated from it and carried away.
That’s also the difference between digestion and absorption. Digestion breaks food down. Absorption is when the resulting nutrients move from the digestive tract into the body.
What’s Left Keeps Moving
After the small intestine has absorbed most of the available nutrients, the remaining material moves into the large intestine. It still contains water along with material the body hasn’t digested or absorbed.
The large intestine absorbs much of that remaining water. As the contents move along and water is removed, what’s left becomes more solid and eventually forms stool.
So a bowel movement isn’t simply yesterday’s dinner passing through unchanged. By the time that material leaves the body, the food has been physically and chemically transformed, usable nutrients have been removed, and much of its water has been absorbed.
