Why Does Your Body Burn Calories at Rest?

Even when you’re doing absolutely nothing, your body isn’t. Your heart is still beating, you’re still breathing, your brain is still working, and your body is still keeping everything running behind the scenes.

So sitting on the couch or sleeping doesn’t stop you from burning calories. It just means you’re not using extra energy that comes with getting up and moving around.

Calories Are a Measure of Energy

We tend to hear about “burning calories” when we’re talking about walking, running, or working out, so it’s easy to equate calories with physical activity.

But a calorie is really just a way of measuring energy. So when we say your body is burning calories, what we’re actually talking about is your body using energy. And you use energy for a whole lot more than moving around.

Even at rest, there’s a long list of things your body is doing.

Your Body Is Always Doing Something

Think about everything your body is doing without you asking it to. You don’t ask your heart to beat or tell your lungs to take the next breath. Your heart just keeps pumping blood, your lungs keep bringing in oxygen, and your brain keeps everything working together.

And that’s just the start. Your kidneys are filtering your blood. Your liver is processing and storing what your body needs. Your digestive system can still be dealing with the food you ate hours ago. Your immune system doesn’t clock out because you’re sitting on the couch.

All of that is happening at the same time, mostly without you noticing any of it. You might not be doing much, but your body has a full-time job just keeping itself going.

Even Your Cells Are Using Energy

And it doesn’t stop with your organs. Your heart, lungs, brain, liver, and everything else in your body are made of cells, and those cells need energy too.

They’re moving things in and out, making and breaking down substances, repairing themselves, and doing the basic work that keeps them functioning. One cell doing that might not sound like much, but your body is made up of trillions of cells doing their jobs all the time.

That’s what’s easy to miss when you’re lying in bed or sitting completely still. From the outside, it seems like nothing is happening. But inside, your body is busy all the way down to its cells.

Every Body Uses Energy Differently

The fact that everyone burns calories at rest doesn’t mean everyone burns the same amount. Think about two people sitting on the same couch doing exactly the same thing. Their bodies can still have different energy needs because the bodies themselves are different.

Body size matters, and so does what the body is made up of. Age, biological sex, genetics, and other biological differences can play a part too. So there isn’t one amount of energy that every human body needs just to keep going.

There’s actually a name for this basic energy use: basal metabolic rate, or BMR. It describes how much energy your body needs for its most basic functions under specific conditions.

That’s really what resting calorie burn comes down to. Sitting still may look like doing nothing, but keeping a human body running requires a lot.
