Why Do We Grind Our Teeth While Sleeping
Grinding the teeth during sleep, called sleep bruxism, happens when the jaw muscles tighten and the teeth press or slide against each other without conscious control. These muscle contractions usually occur during brief changes in brain activity, most often during lighter stages of sleep rather than deep, uninterrupted sleep. Many people do not realize they grind their teeth until someone else notices the sound or a dentist observes signs of wear.
The jaw remains active while the body rests
Even during sleep, the brain continues regulating breathing, heart rate, muscle tone, and other automatic functions. Although most muscles relax, the jaw muscles can still become active for short bursts.
During these moments, the jaw may clench tightly or move from side to side. As the upper and lower teeth press together or slide across one another, grinding occurs. These episodes are usually brief and may happen several times during a night without waking the person.
Teeth grinding is linked to lighter stages of sleep
Sleep moves through repeating cycles that include light sleep, deep sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Sleep bruxism most often occurs during lighter stages of non-REM sleep or during brief awakenings that many people never remember.

Several influences can affect how often it happens
Sleep bruxism does not have a single, universal cause. Instead, it appears to develop through a combination of factors that influence how the brain and jaw muscles behave during sleep.
Stress and emotional tension are commonly associated with increased jaw muscle activity, but they are only part of the picture. Genetics may contribute because sleep bruxism tends to occur more often in some families. Certain medications, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco use, and some sleep-related conditions have also been linked with nighttime grinding. Because these influences vary between people, sleep bruxism does as well.
The effects depend on how much force the jaw produces
Some people grind their teeth only occasionally and notice no obvious effects, while others generate enough pressure to gradually wear down tooth surfaces or place extra strain on the jaw muscles and joints. Short periods of strong clenching can sometimes create more force than longer periods of lighter grinding.
Grinding can also produce sounds that disturb a bed partner, even when the person doing it remains asleep. In many cases, people first become aware of sleep bruxism because someone hears the grinding or because signs of tooth wear are noticed during a dental examination. Talk in their sleep and teeth grinding are separate sleep-related behaviors that can occur independently or in the same person.
