Why Do We Get Pins and Needles
Pins and needles happen when pressure temporarily disrupts the normal signals traveling through a nerve. As that pressure is relieved, the nerve resumes communicating with the brain, creating the familiar tingling sensation before normal feeling returns. This temporary change in nerve signaling often occurs after sitting, kneeling, or sleeping in one position for a while.
Pressure briefly interrupts nerve signals
Nerves carry electrical messages that allow the body to sense touch, temperature, and movement. They pass through muscles, joints, and other tissues, where body position can sometimes place enough pressure on them to interfere with those messages.
When a nerve is compressed, fewer sensory signals reach the brain. The affected area may begin to feel numb because normal communication has been interrupted. Once the pressure is relieved, the nerve begins transmitting signals normally again.
The returning signals create the tingling feeling
Many people think the sensation comes entirely from blood rushing back into the area, but the tingling is mainly caused by the nerve resuming its usual activity. As communication is restored, the nerve may briefly send a mixture of signals before settling into its normal pattern.
The brain interprets this changing stream of information as tingling, prickling, or tiny “pins and needles.” The sensation is most noticeable during this transition from interrupted to normal nerve activity.
Certain body positions make it more likely
Pins and needles most often affect the hands, arms, feet, and legs because these parts of the body frequently experience temporary pressure on nerves. Crossing the legs, leaning on an elbow, resting on an arm during sleep, or remaining in one position for an extended period can all create the conditions for this sensation. Similar temporary nerve compression can also explain why hands or feet fall asleep.
This temporary response is called paresthesia
The medical name for this type of tingling is paresthesia. It describes the temporary sensation that occurs as normal nerve communication is restored after pressure has briefly interrupted the flow of signals.
Putting it all in context
Pins and needles reflect the way the nervous system responds to a brief interruption in nerve communication. Pressure on a nerve can temporarily reduce the flow of sensory messages, and the return of those signals creates the tingling sensation that follows. It is a normal example of how the nervous system continuously adjusts to changes in body position while maintaining communication between the body and the brain, including reflexes such as flinching.
