Why Do We Have Nightmares
Dreams sometimes become vivid, frightening, or emotionally intense because the brain remains active while the body is asleep. During rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the brain processes information from waking life while creating detailed dreams, and that activity can sometimes produce disturbing dream content. Scientists have several well-supported theories about why this happens, but no single explanation accounts for every nightmare.
The brain stays active while the body rests
