Why Do We Snore
Air flowing through a partially narrowed airway during sleep causes soft tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat to vibrate. Those vibrations produce the sound known as snoring. During sleep, the muscles that help keep the airway open naturally relax, allowing the airway to narrow enough for those tissues to move as air passes by.
Snoring can range from a quiet, occasional sound to loud, frequent noise. It is a result of how air moves through the upper airway during sleep, and the amount of vibration varies depending on the shape of the airway and the conditions affecting it at the time.
Air passing through the airway creates the sound
When people are awake, muscles around the throat help keep the airway open while breathing. During sleep, those muscles relax, allowing the soft palate, uvula, tongue, and throat tissues to move more freely.
As air passes through the narrower airway, these tissues can flutter instead of remaining still. That movement, rather than the act of breathing itself, creates the sound of snoring. The louder the vibrations, the louder the sound is likely to be.
Airway shape influences how easily tissues vibrate
The size and shape of the nose, mouth, jaw, tongue, and throat determine how much space air has to move through during sleep. In some people, the airway leaves less room for airflow, making tissue vibration more likely.
Temporary changes can also affect airflow. Nasal congestion, for example, reduces the amount of air moving through the nose, often shifting more breathing to the mouth. That change can increase movement in the soft tissues of the throat, so the pitch and volume of snoring may differ from one person to another or even from one night to the next.
Sleep position also changes airflow
Body position affects how open the airway remains during sleep. When a person sleeps on their back, gravity allows the tongue and other soft tissues to settle farther toward the back of the throat. This slightly narrows the airway and can increase tissue vibration as air flows through.
Muscle relaxation also changes naturally during different stages of sleep, so the sound and intensity of snoring may vary throughout the night. During these stages, people may also dream.

Snoring is the sound produced when relaxed soft tissues in the upper airway vibrate as air passes through them during sleep. It reflects the normal interaction between airflow, airway shape, muscle relaxation, and body position. Because those factors naturally vary between people and throughout the night, the amount and sound of snoring can vary even though the process that creates it remains the same.
