What Is Mobile Passport Control
Mobile Passport Control is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows eligible travelers to submit passport information, travel details, and a customs declaration through an official mobile app before passport inspection. It is available at many U.S. airports and other participating ports of entry.
The program does not replace a passport. Instead, it moves part of the information collection process to an earlier point in a traveler’s arrival, allowing CBP to receive and review certain information before the inspection begins.
It is a digital part of passport inspection
Mobile Passport Control collects certain arrival information electronically before a traveler meets with a CBP officer. Through the official app, eligible travelers submit passport details, travel information, and a customs declaration that become part of the inspection process after arrival.
Collecting this information in advance allows CBP to begin reviewing it before the face-to-face inspection takes place. The inspection itself remains the same. A CBP officer still verifies the traveler’s identity, reviews the submitted information, and determines whether any additional inspection is needed before making an admission decision.

Mobile Passport Control is sometimes mistaken for a passport, a visa, or Global Entry because each relates to international travel and entering the United States.
A passport remains the document used to verify a traveler’s identity and citizenship. Mobile Passport Control does not replace that document. It only changes how certain arrival information is submitted before inspection.
It is also different from Global Entry. Global Entry is a Trusted Traveler Program that requires advance enrollment and approval. Mobile Passport Control uses a different process and serves a different purpose, even though both programs are designed to support border processing for eligible travelers.
Another common misunderstanding is that using the app guarantees faster processing. Inspection times continue to vary based on operational conditions, arrival volumes, and inspection requirements at the port of entry.
