Why Do We Cry
Crying is the body’s automatic response to certain physical conditions and strong emotions, producing tears that protect the eyes or accompany emotional experiences. The same tear glands produce all tears, but the brain and the situation determine why they are released. Some tears keep the eyes healthy, while others respond to irritation or intense emotions.
Not all tears are the same
The body produces three main types of tears, each with a different role.
Basal tears continuously coat the surface of the eyes, helping keep them moist, smooth, and protected while supporting clear vision.
Reflex tears are produced when the eyes encounter irritants such as smoke, wind, dust, or the vapors released while chopping onions. They help wash those irritants away and are closely related to why eyes water.
Emotional tears appear during strong emotional responses. Scientists know they are triggered by the brain, although the purpose of emotional tears is still being studied.
The brain starts the crying response
Emotional crying begins in the brain, not in the eyes. When a person experiences a strong emotion, regions of the brain involved in processing emotions activate the autonomic nervous system, which controls many automatic body functions.
These signals reach the tear glands above each eye, causing them to produce extra tears. Other automatic responses may occur at the same time, including changes in breathing, facial expressions, or vocal sounds.
Strong emotions and physical pain can trigger tears
Although crying is often linked with sadness, many different emotions can produce the same response. Happiness, relief, gratitude, frustration, embarrassment, and even laughter may all activate the brain’s crying response.
Physical pain can also trigger tears because the brain processes pain and emotion through closely connected systems. Whether the trigger is emotional or physical, crying is generally an automatic response rather than a deliberate action.
People vary in how easily they cry because emotional responses differ from one person to another.
Emotional tears may serve several purposes
Unlike basal and reflex tears, emotional tears do not have one fully understood biological purpose. One leading explanation is that crying helps communicate a person’s emotional state. Tears and facial expressions can signal distress, joy, relief, or other strong emotions without words, making those feelings easier for other people to recognize.
Scientists are also studying whether emotional tears are linked to other changes within the body during intense emotional experiences. Although several theories have been proposed, no single explanation fully explains why humans produce emotional tears.
