Why Do We Get Chills Without Being Cold

Chills can happen even when the air around you is warm because they are controlled by the body’s temperature regulation system, not just the temperature of your surroundings. When the brain detects a change in the body’s internal temperature or adjusts the temperature it is trying to maintain, it triggers rapid muscle contractions known as shivering. These contractions generate heat, creating the sensation of chills even when the surrounding environment is not cold. The brain constantly monitors signals from the body and automatically adjusts its responses to help keep internal temperature within a normal range.

Your brain controls chills through the body’s thermostat

A small area of the brain called the hypothalamus acts as the body’s thermostat. It receives information from temperature sensors in the skin and deeper tissues, then determines whether the body needs to conserve heat or produce more.

When the hypothalamus senses that additional heat is needed, or temporarily changes the temperature it is working to maintain, it activates muscles throughout the body. Their rapid, repeated contractions produce heat without requiring conscious effort. This automatic response is closely related to shivering when cold, although chills can occur even without exposure to low temperatures.

Internal changes can activate the same response

Cold weather is only one trigger for chills. The same temperature-control system can respond to changes happening inside the body.

For example, the immune system can alter how the brain regulates temperature while responding to infection. Emotional stress, excitement, or a surge of adrenaline can briefly activate parts of the nervous system that produce chills or shivering. After intense exercise, the body also shifts from generating heat to releasing it, and that adjustment can temporarily trigger chills as temperature regulation changes. Similar changes in muscle activity can also explain muscles shake after exercise.

Chills and shivering are related but not identical

People often use the words chills and shivering interchangeably, but they describe different parts of the same response.

A chill is the sensation of feeling cold or experiencing a wave of coldness. Shivering is the rapid muscle movement that often accompanies that sensation and helps generate heat. A person can experience chills with only mild shivering, or shiver without strongly feeling cold, depending on how the body’s temperature-control system is responding. The same automatic temperature-control system is also responsible for skin goosebumps, which help conserve body heat.

Putting it all in context

Chills are a normal response produced by the body’s temperature regulation system rather than simply a reaction to cold surroundings. They reflect the brain’s continuous effort to keep internal temperature stable as it responds to changes in body signals, immune activity, nervous system activity, and heat production. Although chills are often associated with cold weather, they are ultimately driven by the body’s internal thermostat as it works to maintain a stable internal temperature.
