Why Do Hands Get Cold
Cold hands happen because the body regulates temperature by adjusting both blood flow and heat loss. When the body begins losing heat, it reduces the amount of warm blood reaching the hands so more warmth stays around vital organs. At the same time, the hands lose heat quickly because they are exposed to the surrounding environment, causing them to feel cold before much of the rest of the body.
The hands release heat more easily than other body parts
The hands cool quickly because they have many small blood vessels close to the skin and are usually uncovered. They also have relatively little muscle or body fat to help retain warmth. As heat naturally moves from warmer objects to cooler surroundings, the hands often lose warmth faster than larger, better-insulated areas such as the chest or abdomen.
Even when the body’s internal temperature remains stable, the hands can cool or warm noticeably as surrounding conditions change. The same temperature regulation process also explains cold feet and, in stronger cold responses, fingers turning white.
Blood flow shifts to protect the body’s core
Blood carries heat throughout the body. When conditions are warm, more blood can circulate near the skin, allowing excess heat to escape. As conditions become colder, the nervous system signals small blood vessels near the skin to narrow. This reduces heat loss while keeping more warm blood closer to the body’s core.
Because the hands are far from the body’s center and contain many surface blood vessels, they are often among the first places where these changes become noticeable.
The environment and activity both influence hand temperature
Cold weather is only one factor that affects how warm or cold the hands feel. Wind, cool water, air-conditioned spaces, and holding cold objects can all increase the amount of heat leaving the skin. Similar changes in temperature also help explain why the nose runs when it’s cold.
Physical activity generates heat and usually increases circulation, while periods of rest produce less heat. Clothing, body size, and normal differences in circulation also influence how quickly the hands gain or lose warmth, so hand temperature naturally varies from one person to another and from one situation to the next.
Hand temperature changes faster than core temperature
The hands can become noticeably colder without a similar change in the body’s internal temperature because circulation adjusts there sooner than it does in many other areas. Rather than reflecting the temperature of the whole body, the hands often reflect how the body is managing heat at that moment. Under colder conditions, the same temperature-control system may also trigger shivering and goosebumps to help conserve heat.
