Why Do We Salivate

Salivation is an automatic process that produces saliva to prepare the mouth for eating and support functions such as swallowing, speaking, and protecting oral tissues. The brain signals the salivary glands to increase saliva production when it detects food-related cues, including sights, smells, tastes, and eating itself. Saliva helps moisten food, begins the early stages of digestion, and keeps the mouth functioning throughout the day.

Food signals can trigger saliva before eating begins

The process behind salivation starts when the brain receives information from the senses. Seeing food, smelling it, tasting it, or expecting it can activate signals that tell the salivary glands to release more saliva.

This response prepares the mouth for food to arrive. Saliva softens food, makes chewing easier, helps form food for swallowing, and allows taste molecules to reach taste buds. It also begins breaking down certain carbohydrates as part of the early digestive process.

Saliva production changes with different activities

The amount of saliva produced changes throughout the day as the mouth responds to different conditions. Eating, drinking, and speaking typically involve more saliva because the mouth needs additional moisture during these activities.

Different foods can create different responses. Dry foods often need more saliva to make chewing and swallowing easier, while sour foods commonly trigger increased saliva because of their strong acidic taste.

Saliva production also decreases during sleep and changes during periods when the mouth is less active. When saliva production is lower, the mouth may feel dry, which is why dry mouth can occur as part of normal changes in moisture levels.

Saliva supports more than digestion

Saliva plays a role in digestion, but its functions extend beyond breaking down food. It keeps the mouth lubricated for speaking and swallowing, helps clear away small food particles, and creates the moist environment needed for taste.

A watering mouth is not always a direct sign of hunger. Food-related sights, smells, and flavors can increase saliva production because the brain is responding to signals associated with eating. These signals are part of the same digestive process that includes other responses such as feeling full after eating.
